Scoop Kick: The Ultimate Guide

In this article we will look at one of the most used kicks for self-defense, especially used during the camp of krav maga or jeet Kune doo; we are speaking about the scoop kick.

The scoop kick is a simple kick typically used on the soft style like kung fu, due to his lack of power; with this kick, you can target only soft targets: mainly the groin and sometimes the sacrum. The scoop kick is a close-range kick, and it must be delivered without any intuition by your opponent.

The scoop kick is one of the easiest kicks, and without any training, I am pretty sure that at least once a time in your life, you already made it.

During the remaining part of the article, we will take a look at how to do it and its main use.

Important tips for the scoop kick

  • Remember that the surprise effect determines the key to success for that kick, so your main goal will be to avoid any telegraphing move.
  • Keep the body relaxed.

Where can I hit with a scoop kick?

Typical targets include the groin, from the front or the back, and in some cases, the sacrum.

This kick is not used on the mma because of the rule’s restriction, but in some rare situations, we saw that kick hitting part of the lower legs to disturb the fighter.

Typical application

A simple application of that kick is when your opponent is throwing a punch; in that case, you can evade your opponent’s outside range, make pivot with your leg, and then lift-kick to your opponents’ sacrum testicles from behind.

How to train the scoop kick

The best way to train that kick is by using a heavy bag at a level where you can simulate the kick on the groin.

Another way is to try padding together with a sparring partner or a mirror to check and monitor your lift speed and control of the movements.

Can I use scoop kick for self-defense?

The scoop kick is better and more used than the front leg front kick for self-defense; this is due to his timing and velocity on the execution.

It is frequently used in self-defense, particularly at close range; if an assailant tries to punch and can block the punch or skip it, you can make a round of 45 degrees and immediately lift the front leg into his groin.

Why Jeet Kune Doo use the scoop kick?

One of the main reasons is that Bruce Lee was a depth supporter of simply believing that simple is better than acrobatic kick.

One of my favorite quotes of Bruce Lee is the following:

I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.

If you read that quotes, you can understand one of the fundamental principles of jeet Kune and why some of the most simple techniques as the scoop kick, are part of that martial art.

CONCLUSION

You the scoop kick with caution, and my recommendation is to use it only in the extreme case of life because, as you were reading before, it can damage a person.
